Commentary
Many words look identical in English and French, but do not cover the same linguistic ground. Pertinent and pertinence are two examples. When you spy them in French, there’s only about a 50/50 chance that pertinent is an appropriate translation in English. Some translators default to relevant, but there again, relevant does not always suit the context, as you will see in the examples below.
